July 4th 2010 Raft UP
Awesome! That was the most common expression heard over the July 4th Holiday! The lake was calm, LCSPS members showed up WITH their families in record numbers for the raft up, and the fireworks were great as usual - with special thanks to Carson! Good friends, great weather, and a wonderful holiday to celebrate the liberty of our Nation! GET OUT AND DO SOMETHING FUN - LCSPS MEMBERS and their families - JUST DO IT!

It was a great BBQ and the weather was nice to top it off! LCSPS members and family gathered at the Anchorage to kick of another great 4th of July Weekend! GET OUT AND DO SOMETHING FUN!
June 2010 Canoe Trip!
It was truly a family event, with great fun to be experienced by many members of the LCSPS and their families! The Ouisko Chitto is truly a best kept secret for the locals, and some from Seatle, too! GET OUT AND DO SOMETHING FUN!
Friday Night Social Sunset Cruise!
The evening of June 11 was special! The McCains brought BBQ crabs, there was sausage, cheese, veggies, sweets, boudin, etc, etc. The Anchorage was pleasant. Harvey and Margaret took everyone on a Moonlight Cruise aboard Manzanita. Just a perfect evening with friends!
Flare Training
The LCSPS hosted a "Flare Training" seminar on the beach near the LCSPS Clubhouse. Jackson Schrumpf proposed the idea for the training and was unanimously appointed to chair the event. Special thanks to the United State Coast Guard for teaching and instructing the group. Also, thanks to the Lake Charles Fire Department, Calcasieu Parish Sherriff's Office, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, the City of Lake Charles, and Chemical Waste Management who were also involved and supported the event! It was a HUGE SUCCESS and very educational!
Friday Night Social Lake Front Orchestra Concert!
The American Waterways Orchestra visited Lake Charles' Lake Front Seawall, and the LCSPS members showed up to support them! It was a beautiful evening, with great music and a relaxed, family-related event for our Friday Night Social. We hope you can make it to one of these events!
National Boat Safe Week Activities!
We had a jam-packed weekend on May 22 and 23rd! Starting with the Boat Smart Class held at the Anchorage and the Vessel Safety Examination support at West Marine on Saturday, then off to Prien Lake for a Raftup, and back to the Anchorage on Sunday for a VSE Social event! We'll try to make this an annual summer kickoff event!
Sabine Squadron's Flip-to-Flops Event
Many members of the LCSPS traveled by vessel, car, truck, boat, etc. to Pleasure Island, Tx, to attend the annual Sabine Squadron's Flip-to-Flop's weekend event. The weekend theme was "A Redneck Wedding", but some people became confused with what a redneck is and what a bayou cajun is, so.... anyway - a good time was had, crawfish were plentiful, music was good, and best of all GREAT FRIENDS!
2010 Change of Watch
The Lake Charles Sail & Power Squadron held their annual Change of Watch on March 13, 2010. Lt/C Dale Thibodeaux, AP was installed as Commander by District 21 Commander Shirley Heald, AP. Trisha Garber, P (Executive Officer) was absent due to illness. The event included a social hour, Dinner, and a reception followed. It was a wonderful, elegant event enjoyed by all, with great food and friendship. The 2010 Executive Bridge wishes to send a huge THANK YOU for all who attended! And a special thanks goes out to the members of Sabine Squadron, along with many District Officers who traveled long distance to join us. Enjoy the pictures!
Boat Show
The LCSPS was well represented at the Boat, Sport and Travel Show at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Our booth is always a big hit since we use our custom bar which looks like the stern of a boat. Several members volunteered to work the booth during the 3 day show. Special thanks to Annette McCain for organizing this event and her many helpers!
Sabine SPS Installation of Officers and Christmas Party
Several of your LCSPS Bridge and Committee members attended the Installation of Officers to the newly formed Sabine Sail and Power Squadron, in Port Arthur, TX. They have a great group put together, and with Ron and Gonga Gremillions' USPS past experience, and the desire and leadership capabilities of the new officers and members, they will certainly succeed in having a tremendous First Year!
2009 Christmas Raft Up and Light up the Lake
It was cold, but the winds were mild and the sky was gorgeous, with a large number of members joining in for the raft up. No lighted boat parade due to the sea wall construction, but it's always a great time rafting up with your fellow members and friends on beautiful Lake Charles! Great food and great friends kept us warm!
LCSPS Christmas Party 2009
Happy Holidays from the LCSPS. If you did not get a chance to join us for the LCSPS Christmas Party, you missed a very good time! As you can tell from the pictures, a good time was had by all. Special thanks to the decorating committee, food & drinks committee, Mike with West Marine and especially Al Touchet for entertaining us all night long. Merry Christmas!
District 21 Fall Conference
The District 21 Fall Conference was held in Lake Charles. It was a fun filled weekend with many events for all. Our Commander was busy receiving several awards at the conference. Thanks to all for participating and making this a very successful event for Lake Charles and District 21.
Fall Conference - Halloween Party
What a way to end the Fall Conference! The last evening of the D-21 District Conference was a Halloween Ball at the Best Western Richmond Suites in Lake Charles. It was a great success as the ghosts of the night took over and enjoyed the music provided by our member Alvin Touchet. We hope everyone enjoyed their visit to Lake Charles and enjoyed the conference. Special thanks to all of our members who helped to make this possible and a huge success!
Fall Conference - Friday Evening Social
The weather did not cooperate with us on Friday. We had a full day of rain and some very cool weather so we had to scrub our plans of a dockside social and boat cruise and quickly move to "Plan B". As you can see, Plan B was not a bad plan at all. We treated all of our guests to an evening of fun at the Anchorage. The building was full, top and bottom but we were in no short supply of fun. Guests enjoyed some great food, lot of visiting, a few drinks and an evening of beach and island music from our own Al Touchet. As our Chief Commander says, Boating is fun .... we'll show you how. But in this case, if it rains, we know how to take shelter and still have some fun!
Fall Conference - Cochon de Liat
Our Commander says it every month and now we know it's true. We really do have the BEST members! So many of our members have stepped up help out in so many ways to make the fall conference a success. Thank You All for being the best of the best! The Conchon de Liat was held at the Anchorage. The event was attended by 125 D/21 guests and local members including our District Commander, Shirley Heald and the Chief Commander of the USPS, Creighton Maynard. As you can tell from the photos, we let the good times roll and shared our facility, people and spirit with all that attended.
Wooden Boat Festival
Thanks to suggestions by many of our members, we decided to take a trip to the Wooden Boat Festival in Madisonville, LA. We rented a 50 passenger bus and left Lake Charles at 8 AM for a full day of fun at the boat festival. The weather looked a little dull but that was the only dull part of the LCSPS Road Trip to the Wooden Boat Festival. Well, the Bus was a little late and we did get stuck in a field but other than that, it was a great trip! Most are already talking about our plans for next year's trip. Please take a moment to look at the photos from the event ..... remember, you can click on each photo to enlarge.
Anchorage Upgrade
If you have not been by the Anchorage lately, you are in for a big surprise! The property committee, headed up the property man himself, Harvey Kuttner, has been working very hard on some major upgrades to our facility. Thanks to the generosity of some of our members and the frugal nature of our treasurer, dreams have once again become a reality in the LCSPS. Please take a moment to look through the pictures, make plans to come to the next meeting and get involved with your organization!
Lake Arthur Boat Trip 2009
This year's trip to Lake Arthur was again a success with over 45 members attending the Saturday dinner. More members than usual arrived by car, due to ore than usual water pump problems on several boats. Since the former "Mothership" was one of those afflicted with mechanical problems, the commander's husband provided the Mermenthau River Cruise vessel. Geoffrey Howse did a wonderful job accomodating 33 guests for this adventure under the watchful eyes of commander Irene.Pictures were provided by Armin Brahm. Ken Abrahams, Glenn Rodgers and Raymond Duhon.
Sabine Squadron Inauguration!
The Lake Charles Sail & Power Squadron showed up in huge numbers to support our friends in Pleasure Island and to help kick start the newest D/21 Squadron! Boating in Texas 2009
Well, its official ... the 3rd Annual LCSPS Cruise down the Texas Coast became the D/21 Cruise down the Texas Coast when we met up with the boating group from the Galveston Bay Sail & Power Squadron! The weather was perfect, the water was clear (yes, there is clear water in Texas) to food was good and the friends were great. We hope you can join us next year!
July 4th 2009 Raft UP
Quite a few LCSPS members rafted up on Lake Charles to enjoy the annual 4th of July fireworks. This year, the barge was next to the sea wall, offering boaters a different angle, with the city lights in the background. Except for a certain someone making waves with his dinghy (or was it the Coasties chasing him), everyone enjoyed the evening breeze and full moon!
Annual Ouiska Chitto Canoe Trip
The 2nd Annual Ouiska Chitto Canoe Trip was a huge success! There were 11 canoes and 22 people that participated in the event. The weather was warm and the water was cool so it made for a great day on the water. As you can tell from the photos, everyone had a great time. Special thanks to Clyde and Emily for organizing this event again this year!
Full Moon Raft Up - June 6th
The LCSPS hosted a Full Moon Raft up on Prien Lake on June 6/7th. The weather was terrific, and it brought out the boaters! There were a dozen vessels for the raft up, and some of these were never before seen at a LCS&PS raft up! Well, maybe never before seen by this photographer! We welcome all members to get out on the water and join us! Paddle, motor or sail, we enjoy the company! And hey, you never know who you'll spot on the bow of a sail boat!
Lakefront Development Ground Breaking
The Lake Charles Sail & Power Squadron boats and members were present for the ground breaking celebration for Lakefront Development. Our Chaplain, Lt. Brooks Fleig, gave the invocation at the event. Nine boats and a big group of members attended the events. The first phase of the project has begun. This phase will include the 52 slip Transient Marina which will be complete by March 2010. The LCSPS has been very involved with the project and look forward to future boating events with our friends and out of town guests at the Marina.
Boating with Shreveport Sail & Power Squadron
The LCSPS was host to some very special guests from the Shreveport Sail & Power Squadron. Six boats and 24 people visited Lake Charles and the Lake Charles Sail & Power Squadron. The group came by boat from Lake Arthur to spend a weekend in Lake Charles over the Memorial Day Weekend. The LCSPS hosted the visitors at the Anchorage. We had a great cookout and plenty of time to visit since the Blessing of the Fleet and Boating on the Calcasieu was cancelled due to the rain. We really enjoyed the event and hope they will join us again next year!

On May 2nd, 2009 the Lake Charles Sail and Power Squadron presented the 3rd Annual Concert on the Water. The event on the L'Attitude features the Island music by Kelly McGuire. Special thanks to all our our out of town guests that attended as well as all of those that helped organize this event!
Tribute to Lady Claire
A total of 14 boats participated in our tribute to the Lady Claire dock at the Civic Center Seawall. The dock has been there for many years and hosted many functions and boating events but will be torn down soon since this will be the site of the new Marina in Lake Charles. The weather was perfect for the event. Many members came by boat and car. As you can tell from the photos, everyone had a great time!
2009 Change of Watch
On Saturday March 14, 2009, the Lake Charles Sail and Power Squadron had their annual Change of Watch at the Isle of Capri. More than 100 attendents made it the largest ever COW celebration. Please take a moment to look through the pictures from the event. Thanks to all for participating and joining us for the annual event!
Happy New Year!
The LCSPS celebrated the New Year of 2009 with a New Year's Eve Party at the Anchorage. We had live music, great food, drinks and party favors to celebrate the occasion. It was a night of fun and dancing to celebrate the end of a fantastic year for our organization. We also celebrated several retirements for a few of our members. Please take a moment to look through the photos from the event.
Christmas Cocktail Party
The Christmas Cocktail Party was held at the Anchorage again this year. The Anchorage was decorated perfectly and the room was full of Christmas cheer. Alvin Touchet played for the crowd and everyone stayed to the end. We had great food, cold spirits and lots of fun. The floor shook as the crowd danced to the music. We had four guests attend and then joined as members before the night was over. Finally, we know it was a great party because Herman stayed awake until the end!
Halloween 2008
Several members came out to enjoy the special Halloween Dockside Social. Some came by car and a few came by boat. Later in the evening, the pirate ship, Contraband, arrived at the dock with a host of costumed guests that joined in fun. A little later in the evening, our neighbors from the boat club showed up to trick-or-treat and invite us to walk down the dock and join their party .. so we did. It was a great night of fun!

We had a full schedule on Saturday with a fleet of dinghies charting the lake during the day, a cruise up the Mermentau River in the afternoon and a group seafood dinner at Knott's Corner with 40 people attending in the evening. Thanks to all for making this a fantastic trip and weekend!
Clean-Up after Ike
When hurricane Ike roared into Texas, it was so huge that it flooded Louisiana and Lake Charles as well. The water rose about 9 feet above normal and consequently flooded the lower part of the LCPS Anchorage. On September 20, 2008 a group of members took it upon themselves (prodded by our Commander Ben) to clean up the mess. By 1300 the job was done and celebrated with "FEMA" (free) beer, Sprite and Coke.
Port Arthur after Ike
Chris and Annette McCain visited the marina and Ron and Songa Gremillion's house after Ike dealt the area a devastating blow. Since the LCPS has been there for many years with or without boats, almost everyone remembers the way the Pleasure Island Marina used to be. Here are the latest pictures showing the present state of devastation. It is sad indeed.
Help to Members affected by Hurricane Ike
During the clean-up of the Anchorage, there were so many volunteers, that a small party of them was dispatched to help LCPS members Dr.John Stubblefield and P/C Stan Chapman, who were heavily flooded. The help to move heavy items was very much appreciated and made everyone aware of the wonderful camaderie of members ready to help others in need.
Cochon de Lait - Member Appreciation Day
The Executive Board of the LCPS hosted the 2008 Couchon de Lait with all the trimmings at the Anchorage on Saturday, July 5th. The event was free to all members to thank them for their participation in the LCPS. It was an extremely successful "packed house" event. The highlight of the day happened, when P/C Ned Dautriel returned under his own power from the Fishing Rodeo. It was the first trip in his boat after it was severely damaged by hurricane Rita.
July 4th Celebration - Lake Charles
On July 4, the LCPS held it's annual Raftup in the lake. This year we started at the Civic Center sea wall to pick up boatless friends, members and guests. The raft-up started after 7PM. Fifteen boats tied up and watched the wonderful fireworks exploding directly above us. There was a lot of visiting and story telling.
Sharon's Suprise Party & Social
We moved the dockside social once again! This time we went to Tom Moilanen's house for Sharon's Surprise B-Day party. Tom invited the entire LCPS as well as a few other friends for a great dockside party and river cruise. Sharon was a bit surprised when she drove in from work and notice vehicles parked all over the road leading her home. When she arrived, she found her home filled with our 80 friends to celebrate her birthday. The party was complete with food, drinks and live music from our own Alvin Touchet. The party concluded with a river cruise aboard the L'Attitude on the Calcasieu River.

Please take a moment to look through the pictures from our event!
Contraband Days - Show Your Dinghy
If you cannot guess by the name of our event and these pictures, we had a great time sponsoring the 1st annual "Show Your Dinghy" contest at Contraband Days. The event was very successful and well received by the community. Our goal is to bring water events back to Contraband Days and we are off to a great start! There so many people to thank for making this possible but special thanks to Lt/C Irene Howse for taking on this project from start to finish and Craig Dupont with Dupont Sewer for sponsoring the event.
Contraband Days 2008
The first weekend of Contraband Days was a huge success under blue skies and relatively calm winds. The Lake Charles Power Squadron held its annual D/21 Raftup and participated in both the "Show your Dinghy" contest and the "Lighted Boat Parade". Our Squadron was particularily honored to have the USPS Chief Commander Creighton Maynard and his wife Glenda join us during the festivities.Thank you and your entourage P/D/C Tom Derden and wife Mary. You looked great dressed up as real pirates accompanied by your wenches.

Thanks to everyone that participated and a special thanks to Songa & Ron Gremillion for putting all of this together ... as alwasys ... super job!!
St. Patrick's - Green Beer & Bingo
The LCPS celebrated St. Patrick's Day and kicked off the new season for Friday evening Dockside Socials with a Bingo & Beer event at the Anchorage. I would like to thank Ken & Denise Savant for helping us with the Bingo and proving all of the equipment. Everyone brought gifts for prizes and we have a gift certificate for the blackout. The bar was a popular place with lots of Green Beer for all. Thanks to everyone for making this a fun event for all!

Frostbite Cruise 2008
Several new members did not know what the "Frostbite Cruise" was all about. They knew it was a traditional boating event many years ago and it was held in the middle of January. Well, we had a great turn our for the return of the Frostbite Cruise. Eight boats and 30 members attended the event. We all managed to keep warm and a good time was had by all. The North wind was gusting over 30 knots on Saturday and we woke up to a 29 degree morning!
Happy New Year!
A big group of boaters gathered together to celebrate the end of a great year and to bring in the New Year! Twelve boats filled up the Civic Center Seawall to enjoy the great weather, fun and friendship. After three days on the Seawall, the weather finally turned cold and the boaters headed for shelter. The Anchorage was decorated inside and out with Christmas decor that everyone enjoyed. Special thanks to Songa Gremillion and the Christmas Committee for organizing a fantastic holiday event!
Helping our Fellow Members
Set it free - Let it Go ! As most of you know, Ned & Sheryl Dautriel lost everything during Hurricane Rita. Their home, camp and boathouse were destroyed. Over the last two years, they have been rebuilding their home and trying to get back to normal life. The boat and boathouse still needed to be addressed so a group of our members volunteered to help. Tom Moilanen donated the use of his heavy equipment and many of our members vowed to help rescue the boat. Thanks to everyone that stepped up to help our fellow members in a time of need!
LCPS Octoberfest 2007
In 2000 the first Annual Octoberfest was held, celebrating the 2000 LCPS Commanders German herritage. IT was celebrated every year since, except during the 2 years following Hurricane Rita. This year's event was attended by more than 47 members and guests. There were lots of Lederhosen, Bavarian Hats and German Suspendersas well as real and unreal Dirndel Dresses. Needless to say there was also plenty of Bratwurst, Sauerkraut and Potato Salad. Of Course there would not have been an OCTOBERFEST without Kegs of beer and Gallons of Wine to quench the thirst from the Pretzel Man's Salt Pretzels.
Adventure Cove Volunteers
Numerous LCPS members volunteered for the assembly of the "Treasure Cove" Playground. Work continued throgh rain and shine and was awarded with an end of shift feeding. Volunteers learned also hands on what "Gumbo Muck" is all about.
Cruise to Lake Arthur 2007
The first weekend of October was filled with boating activities for all of those that attended the events in Lake Arthur. Seven boats made the trip including crew and guests and several others came by car. About 45 people attended the dinner on Sat. night and everyone in Lake Arthur knew the "people on the boats from Lake Charles" were in town! A big lighted sign said "Welcome LC Power Squadron" A major event was the Friday night Crab and Shrimp Boil provided by Jeff Boudreaux and his wife, along with a few trips to the "Red Rose" Bar.
Anchorage Work Day September 2007
A big THANKS to the cleanup crew that showed up for the Anchorage Work Day. Wow, what a difference a little cleaning makes! The entire place was cleaned from front to back and all of the outdated material and extra "items" were thrown away. We even fixed a few things including the kitchen drawers! Again, THANKS for your help! Cdr. Ben
Triple Seven Summer Fest 2007
If you missed the Triple Seven Summer Fest, you might have missed the best party in LCPS history! Although the weather was bad all week, we ended up with great weather for all of the events. The Summer Dockside Social was a big hit with a special night of Bingo for a full house crowd. Then on Saturday, 07/07/07, the day was filled with great teamwork, lots of fun and great food. Then when the sun went down, the band started and the party continued. In all, we had over 70 people attend and a good time was had by all!

Deep Water!
For many years we have talked about addressing the shallow water near the Anchorage dock. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Harvey Kuttner, our dream of deep water is now a reality. Harvey obtained all of the required permits, obtained permission to use the land north of the canal for a spoil area, coordinated funding with all of the boat clubs and interests along the canal and finally found a contractor that specialized in type of work with the right equipment to get the job done. Once again, we all say "Thank You Harvey" for a job well done!
Labor Day BBQ
On Monday September 4, 2006 the Administratibe Officer Lt/C Irene Howse and husband Geoffrey invited the LCPS members to a Labor Day cookout at their house on the Calcasieu river west fork. There was plenty of food, drinks and good conversations to last until the evening hours. The weather was wonderfull and boats, waterskiers and Personal Watercrafts passed by the dock on their way up and down the river.
Contraband Days 2007
The second weekend of Contraband Days - for the scheduled "Seawall Raftup" - started out with blue skies and sunshine galore. Saturday May 13 was a great day for Cdr Tom Moilanen and Sharon to host the event on their boat "Latitude".Many members and many boats came out to enjoy the BBQ and the Contraband Day activities. Who would have guessed that the following day the rains came back.
Progress at our Anchorage after Rita
Some of the pictures were taken in early October 2005. The Anchorage was flooded by six feet of water, causing the dock to be lifted up and moved 20 feet to the east. Floating benches destroyed much of the screened porch and few shingles remained on the roof. After a lot of weekend clean-up parties major progress was made by Easter 2006. A new blue metal roof was installed, the porch was rescreened, doors replaced, the bathrooms reworked, new Air conditioners installed at higher elevations and the dock was replaced by with stronger better pilings.
Anchorage Repair
Repairs are underway at the Anchorage. Hurricane Rita dealt us a major blow but everyone has been working together to bring the Anchorage back to mint condition. Many of the repairs are complete but there are still many more to go. A new dock and A/C units are next on the list. Take a look at the pictures in this section and let us know if you can lend a helping hand!
Armin's Boat Review (After Rita)
Leaving my essentially intact home during the first few days after Rita hit, revealed devastation to most boats everywhere. Some were luckier than others. Bowtie Marina and Olmsted's Shipyard received major damage. Many areas were still flooded on September 25 and 26, 2005 and some pictures were taken a week later.
Hurricane Rita
Everyone in Southwest Louisiana knows about hurricanes and now everyone knows about the destruction that a hurricane can inflict on our area. On September 23, 2005, Hurricane Rita came ashore in Southwest Louisiana packing winds well over 120 Mph and a 20 foot high storm surge. Locally, most of our homes were damaged and some of our boats and docks. Over time, everything will be repaired and will return to normal but no one around here will ever forget the name Rita.
Gilligan's Island
Several members of the Lake Charles Power Squadron took a boat trip to Gilligan's Island. Okay, so it really was at the Billy Becker's Boathouse in Orange, Texas but anyone who was there might still think they were on Gilligan's Island! The event was a big success and everyone had a great time. Special thanks to Billy Becker, the Orange Power Squadron and all of our members that helped make this a memorable experience. Please take a look at the cast members and the treasures that they found on Gilligan's Island.
Winter Co-Op Charting
It was a cold morning in Southwest Louisina but the dedicated troups arrived early for a day of Co-Op Charting. The group focused on the Black Lake Area south of Lake Charles. Several members arrived and despite the cool weather and a good time was had by all. By the looks of things, the ladies appeared to have the best time and stayed warm aboard the Lu-e-Lueze!
Poker Run
The 2004 Poker Run was a big success! There were 8 boats that made the trip up river and almost 40 people that attended the event that ended up at the Wilkinson dock. Chris Nelson did a great job coordinating the locations for the poker run. Linda Dessommes was the big winner with an unbelievable 4 Aces to take home pot.
